8-20-2016 Kearney, Nebraska

West of Des Moines, we left I-80 for a more scenic route and found the village of Panora, Iowa.

The scenic route also led us to the village of Adair where, in 1873, Jesse James committed the first train robbery in the west.  The $10,000 reward offered for his arrest ultimately led to his death nine years later at the hands of one of his own gang members.

When we arrived in Kearney, Nebraska, we visited Fort Kearney built in 1848.  It was used to provision and protect the gold seekers and new settlers flooding the Midwest.  The stockade is a reproduction of the original.

With wood and other building materials scarce, new settlers in Nebraska used bricks of sod cut from the prairie to build homes and other buildings.  This reproduction of a sod building was constructed in 1968.

 A bit of Nebraska.

  1. You're finally on the way--yay!! I love the sod house in Nebraska, especially the grass on the roof. But how do they get a lawn mower up there? Or do they use goats? (Also, I'm delighted to find that I can actually read the type on your blog--they eyes are getting better.)

  3. Jim,

Were you the one who killed jesse james to collect the reward? I didn't realize you are that old, but you look good for being that old.
