8-24-2016 Dinosaur National Monument

In the morning we visited the Quarry, a section of sandstone wall protected by a building, in which 1,500 dinosaur bones are embedded.

The Quarry also contains fossils of mammals, amphibians and fish; including fish poop, seen here under magnification.

We hiked a trail near the fossil quarry...

...and found this guy having lunch.

The Green River is one of two rivers that provides water to this very arid land.

One thousand year old petroglyphs can be found in several areas of the park.  Some are of animals that still live here...

...others are not.

TRAVEL WARNING:  When hiking in mountainous areas...

TRAVEL TEASE:  The angel Moroni.

  1. The land out there is hauntingly beautiful and it looks like it never stops rolling. I had not idea there were such old petroglyphs here in our country. They have withstood a thousand years of weather, which is downright awesome.

    1. The land is indeed hauntingly beautiful, and we can cross it on paved roads in the comfort of our air-conditioned cars. It is hard to imagine making this trip in a covered wagon pulled by oxen.
